10 Best Facebook apps to add to your profile

When Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook, it’s hard to imagine that he thought about sending invitations to play Mafia Wars would be part of his social networking wonder. As well as getting in some sneaky Facebook gaming action during work, your life from ex-girlfriends to the Sunday roast you ate last week can be chronicled for the world to see.

With the recent arrival of the now mandatory Facebook Timeline, we’ve picked out 10 Facebook apps to remind you that the office time-waster can actually be quite useful.

Networked Blogs
Bringing the blog community to the Facebook realm, this useful tool is perfect for promoting your own personal blog site. Users can also share other blog content they believe might be of interest to friends, as well as favouriting their own selections in a RSS-style system.

DivShare
The DivShare Facebook app lets users store image, document, audio and video files up to 5GB with the added luxury of having everything located in one easy-to-reach place. Files can be transferred between Facebook friends at the click of the button, and everything is easily accessible via the dashboard.

Norton Safe Web
A useful safety tool to keep those minds at ease. Norton Safe Web scans users’ Facebook wall for malicious links and content, warning them before they click on anything nasty. The app is certainly a popular one, having passed the million user mark last year, and continues to grow as threats on social networks rise.

Privacy Defender
Useful for anyone who’s ever had photos of their drunken escapades viewed by unwanted eyes, Privacy Defender ensures your Facebook privacy is exactly how you want it. With nifty, colourful graphs to illustrate restriction levels, users need only to enter their desired levels of privacy – and Privacy Defender does the rest.

LivingSocial
LivingSocial is an extremely popular deal-searching platform, and its Facebook app means finding great local deals is easier than ever. From restaurants to package holidays, there’s an range of real-time discounts on products and services for users to search through.

Zoho
Zoho is an online office space that lets users collaborate on projects in real time, and the Zoho Office Suite offers users a seamless link between their Zoho and Facebook accounts. Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and databases are among the range of features, which can be stored afterwards  and shared with friends.

Trip Advisor – Cities I’ve Visited
Using an interactive map, the Trip Advisor application lets users plot places they’ve visited or intend to visit in the future. There’s certainly an element of “travel boasting” but the ability to share this information is useful for when friends are looking for advice on their own global voyages.

Jobster
Jobster connects users with company hirers to notify them about available jobs, while providing employees with users’ Facebook information. Integration is seamless, making the experience user friendly. It also lets Facebook users contact friends at selected companies to ask for career advice.

Feedburner
Especially good for business networking and marketing, this nifty app displays all of your Feedburner blogs, podcasts and RSS feeds on your Facebook page. It also lets you invite friends to view and subscribe to your feeds directly from their Facebook account
Runkeeper
If you want to bring a more social feel to your running, the tracking app shares all workout data to your Facebook friends including your current fitness status and whether you’ve actually been slouched on the sofa all day. Running aside, you can also track cycling, swimming, hiking and a whole host of other sports.

Use Facebook without the Data Plan

Use Facebook without the Data Plan Facebook India has partnered with Fonetwish to bring Facebook on every mobile phone without requiring any apps or even the Internet. You dial the *325# number, then enter your Facebook username and password and you are in. You can then send number based commands to access various features of Facebook, chat with friends who are online, add new people to your friends list, and more. I played with the service for some time and it was a nice experience overall. If there were a Unix-like shell interface for Facebook, it would be much similar. Fonetwish says that this service is currently available for Airtel, Aircel, Idea and Tata Docomo users in India. It may be too much work to read your Facebook news feed stories one by one but this is a good option to quickly update your Facebook status or for chatting with friends who are online. The price is reasonable too – you just have pay a subscription fee of 1.00 per day for unlimited usage.

Access Facebook on any Mobile Without the Internet

Do you have an old mobile phone, like the Nokia 1100, that has no browser and can do little more than make phone calls? Or are you stuck in some remote place where there’s no Internet or no other form of data (EGDE/GPRS/3G) connectivity is available? Not a problem. You can still use your Facebook account in India by dialing *325# (or *fbk#) from your mobile phone – this service requires no data plan or Internet and it will even work on phones of the Stone Age. Google+ VS Facebook

Google+ VS Facebook

We all have been talking a lot about Google’s new social networking site Google+ from last few days. During last few days of my use, I realized that some of its features are totally new and unique like Circles whereas other features are inspired from Facebook.
When I accessed my Google+ account for the first time, its stream gave me a feeling of Facebook Wall but as I explored it more and more I found few other features which are either same as Facebook or are advanced versions of Facebook.
If you are a regular user of Facebook, you will also feel like home at Google+ but when you go to photos section or Circles you will realize that your home is more advanced now. Here I have collected some points about Google+ vs. Facebook

Google+ vs. Facebook

1. Google+ stream vs. Facebook wall
Facebook was the first social networking site to introduce the concept of wall. I think Google has integrated Facebook wall concept into its own social networking site Google+ with the name of Stream. For me it is the same Facebook wall but with other name Stream. I couldn’t find much difference between Facebook wall and Google+ stream.
2. Google+ +1 vs. Facebook Like
+1 is another feature which you will notice when you sign in to your account.  A long time back Facebook introduced the feature to like other users’ status updates, comments, photos and videos on your wall. For me +1 is same as like. While using Facebook you can click on Like button whenever you like your friend’s status updates.  In the same way when you use Google+, you can click on +1 button when you like the updates of your friends.
3. Google+ Circles vs. Facebook Lists
Google+ introduced a totally new concept of Circles. Circles allows the users to manage their friends easily. Users can group their friends in different circles of family, friends, acquaintances or anything that they like. Other users will get notified when you add them to your circles. I really like the drag and drop feature of Circles using which users can add their friends to circles. Facebook doesn’t have any such feature like Circles but you can categorize your friends on Facebook using lists feature. You concrete Facebook lists to group your friends like Google+ Circles. You can also delete friend lists on Facebook at any time.
4. Google+ Hangout vs. Facebook Video Chat
Hangout is the video chat feature added to Google+ and it allows you to group chat with other users. Utmost 10 participants are allowed to group chat at the same time. Hangout doesn’t work on mobile devices yet. Facebook also added the ability to video chat among other users recently. But video chat on Facebook doesn’t support group video chatting. You can just do group text chatting on Facebook but not group video chatting.

Exactly same features in Google+ and Facebook

1. You can mention someone’s name in your status update by using “@” symbol on both these sites. 2. You can share your status update among specific users on Google+ using circles and on Facebook using lists. 3. You can click on Timestamp of a status update to get permalink of it.
